Read to Self!
Read to self is so much fun! We get to find a comfortable spot in the room from our favorite rocking chair, to a cozy pillow underneath a table with one of our favorite books! This is also a time when we practice our reading skills such as using picture clues, sounding out beginning letter sounds, identifying our heart words, and sounding out decodable words! Most importantly we build our reading stamina, how long and how strong we can train our brains to read!

Work on Writing!
We really enjoy our time in the "Lightbulb Lab" named after the writing station from Lily's Purple Plastic Purse written by Kevin Henkes. In our Lightbulb Lab we can explore thematic word cards, practice writing sentences with our heart words, and even enjoy discovering new "inspirational" objects placed in our writing center to help inspire us to write wonderful and imaginative stories. This special area in the room is home to markers, colored pencils, colored pens, crayons, and tri-rite pencils. We also have a word tree that houses new thematic word cards which was inspired by Rocket Learns To Write written by Tad Hills. In Kindergarten we begin with labeling our pictures by writing the first letter sound, to sounding out simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, and work up to sounding out other words phonetically, while utilizing our heart word cards to develop full sentences. This is where we can put our phonemic awareness skills and resourcefulness to the test to help us write incredible stories!
Listening Station
At our listening station students can explore a variety of titles and genres. Listening to stories is a great way for children to hear what good reading sounds like. They can pick up on tone and inflection, as well as track the words on the page as they follow along in the book. It also gives students an opportunity to work as a team to make a group decision in choosing a good book to listen to and gather around to enjoy the story!
